. Debt collection is a huge business and most people who are involved in it have a bad reputation. The one thing you want to do is to get the companies that are calling you to stop. It is good to know that there are methods that you can use to keep them from harassing you. You need to understand what is legal or them to do so that you do not get your rights trampled on.

If you owe money to a credit card company then they do have the right to contact you to try to get payment from you. They are not allowed to threaten you by telling you to pay or else you will end up behind bars. In some extreme cases they might make threats to your life and this is just plain illegal. They are also supposed to follow the rules and if they don't you have recourse legally against them.

The goal is to devise a plan to get your debt under control. There is probably a reason that you have a collection agency contacting you. It usually does not happen overnight. It can take time to get into debt and if you have had a reduction in income form a job layoff or your company is slow and they have reduced everybody's hours then you know that making payments can be hard to do. Don't blame yourself it is part of what can happen in a bad economy. The think you want to do is to know how you can protect your self against debt collectors.

If you do not know already then you should become aware with the fact that you can send the collection person a cease and desist letter. This will help you in the short term to keep them from hounding you. There are templates online you can use make sure that you change the name to you and the company that you are sending the letter to. Debt collectors are also not supposed to contact anyone in your family or a friend of yours about any debts. They can not speak about your debt unless it is with you and you alone.

Remember that getting out of debt needs to be a goal. If you currently have a large amount of debt and you are being hounded by a debt collectors then you need to learn what your rights are. Most of these people will go to any lengths to collect there money. This means that they will threaten you and tell you that you may end up in jail if you do not give them what they want. It is also likely they might contact a family member of yours to see where you live. All of these tactics are illegal and if they are used on you there is legal recourse you can take.
